| ASNE SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM
The American Society of Naval Engineers (ASNE) sponsors a scholarship program to encourage college students to enter the field of naval engineering. The program also provides support to naval engineers seeking advanced education in the field.
The programs of study which apply to the diverse field of naval engineering are naval architecture, marine, mechanical, civil, aeronautical, ocean, electrical and electronic engineering, and the physical sciences. Other programs leading to careers with both military and civilian organizations requiring these educational backgrounds are also included. Naval engineering encompasses the design, construction and repair of ships and their installed systems and equipment, as well as research, logistics support, and the management of acquisition and maintenance.
Currently one year scholarship awards are $2,500 for undergraduate students and $3,500 for graduate students. It is further anticipated that the number and size of scholarships will grow in direct proportion to the support the program receives from our members and friends. The award may be used for payment of tuition, fees, and expenses for students who meet the following requirements:
- Application must be for support for the last year of a full-time or co-op undergraduate program or for one year of full-time graduate study leading to a designated engineering or physical science degree in an accredited college or university. A scholarship will not be awarded to a doctoral candidate or to a person already having an advanced degree.
- The candidate must be a United States citizen.
- The candidate must have demonstrated or expressed a genuine interest in a career in naval engineering, (for example, student activities in a professional engineering society and extra-curricular engineering activities).
- All graduate student candidates must be members of ASNE or SNAME (Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers).
Selection criteria will be based on the candidate's academic record, work history, professional promise and interest in naval engineering, extra-curricular activities, and recommendations of college faculty, employers, and others. Financial need may also be considered.
The selection process will be completed in time to make the announcement in early May. The successful candidates will be notified by letter. The award will be in the form of a check for the first academic period payable jointly to the awardee and the college or university which the student will attend. The letter will require that the awardee forward the check to the college or university. The awardee must furnish a transcript showing satisfactory performance to the Scholarship Committee and ASNE to receive the second increment of the award for the subsequent academic period. The letter will further require that in the event the awardee withdraws from the academic program with a tuition refund, the Society will receive a proportionate share of the tuition award.
Applications and supporting documents must be received by 15 February.
